MARKET OVERVIEW

There are approximately 63 million women of reproductive age, typically defined as the ages of 16-45 years (2002 National Survey on Family Growth). It is estimated that approximately 55% (35 million) of these women either currently use or will consider using contraception in the future (500 patient market research study sponsored by Agile in 9/08).

The contraceptive market consists of short-term (oral contraceptives, patch, ring, injectables), long-term (IUD, implant) and permanent contraceptive options. AG200-15 will compete in the short-term market. In a June 2008, 1000 patient market research study sponsored by Agile, women using or desiring to use contraception reported the following usage/interest:

  • 54% OCs
  • 40% condoms*
  • 13% IUD
  • 10% “the shot”
  • 8% ring
  • 7% patch

  • *condoms can be used alone or with other methods

Short-Term

The short term contraceptive market is worth approximately $3 billion. It is dominated by oral contraceptives, which account for nearly 88% of prescriptions and 76% of dollars (IMS data 2008). There is a “convenience” non-daily segment (made up of the ring and patch) that makes up the remaining 12% of scripts and 24% of the dollars. The non-daily segment has significant growth potential based upon women’s desire not to take a pill every day. Up to one-third of reproductive aged women had used Ortho Evra (June 2008 market research).

Unmet Needs – Convenience is a Major Driver

In Agile’s June 2008 market research, patients reported low levels of satisfaction with their contraceptive options. Over 30% of women stated that they were not satisfied with their current contraceptive method. Cost, side effects and convenience were the most common concerns reported.

Agile market research from September 2008 provides further insight into the importance of convenience when choosing birth control. Of women currently using or considering contraception in the future, the majority of these women (80%) would prefer to use birth control that they would not have to remember to take every day. Even more striking is that almost four times as many of these women (256 vs. 68) would prefer to use a once weekly, contraceptive patch to the pill.
