AG890, a weekly progestin-only birth control patch currently in phase II clinical trials, meets a critical need for women seeking a contraceptive option that does not contain estrogen. Women who may benefit from progestin-only contraceptives include, but are not exclusive to:

• Women who smoke
• Overweight or obese women
• Women over the age of 35
• Nursing mothers
• Women with migraine with aura

The AG890 patch delivers a controlled dose of levonorgestrel (LGN), in an amount equivalent to that provided by a daily oral progestin-only contraceptive, throughout the week. The regimen is continuous, with women replacing the patch every seven days with no "patch-free" period. The Agile patch may be applied to the abdomen, buttocks, or upper torso, is soft and flexible with a cloth-like, silky feel, and designed to provide excellent adhesion, comfort, and appearance.

AG890 eliminates some of the challenges associated with progestin-only options currently available. Progestin-only oral contraceptives must be taken at nearly the exact same time every day to reduce the risk of contraceptive failure. Injectables require a visit to the doctor four times per year and are not recommended for use for more than two years due to the risk of decreased bone density. Other alternatives, such as a subdermal implant and IUD, require a long-term commitment and a procedure in the physician's office. AG890 is the first product in the progestin-only category to offer a convenient dosing regimen that women can control and is easily reversible.
